MSI 890GXM-G65 Review

MSI has crammed plenty of features on to this micro ATX motherboard, including USB3 and five SATA2 ports. It supports the latest hexacore AMD Phenom II processors and provides a wide range of overclocking options.

There are two PCI-E x16 slots, but they’ll both run at 8x if you have two cards in them. There’s also one PCI and one PCI-E x1 slot, although the latter will be blocked if you install a large graphics card. Four memory slots can take up to 16GB of DDR3 RAM running at up to 2,133MHz.

The integrated ATI Radeon HD 4290 managed only 3.5fps in Call of Duty 4, so it’s not up to 3D gaming. However, it’s well equipped for dual-monitor or home cinema use, with VGA and DVI outputs as well as an HDMI port capable outputting full HD video, although HD audio will be downsampled to DVD quality. There are also six 3.5mm stereo outputs for the built-in Realtek ALC889, which can be configured for 5.1 surround sound audio with a mic input or 7.1 surround sound without. There’s also an optical S/PDIF output if you need a digital connection to your speakers.

The backplane also provides six USB ports, including two USB3 ports. There’s also an eSATA port.

MSI’s Wind Pad 100 and 110

Posted by Digital Electronics On September - 26 - 2010

MSI-WindPad-U100MSI launched two Tablets in its new Wind Pad range at Computex in Taipei, and they couldn’t be further apart if the company had tried. Both are lOin devices with capacitive touchscreens, but that’s just about where the similarities end.
The Wind Pad 100 runs Windows 7 Starter and has an ultra-low powered 1,66GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor at its heart. Combined with 2GB of memory and Intel’s GMA 3150 graphics chipset, this means Windows 7 runs very slowly. After using the 100 and watching MSI’s PR team demonstrate it, we can’t say we were that impressed.

The most cringe-worthy aspect of the demonstration involved MSI’s Easy Face log-on system, wherein the poor PR representative spent 45 seconds trying to contort her face into the frontward-facing camera so the machine could recognize her. The lOin display has the same 1,024×600 resolution as most netbooks, but MSI’s Wind Ul touch interface makes more efficient use of the space when compared with standard Windows 7. MSI Wind Top AE2420 Review

Posted by Digital Electronics On February - 23 - 2010

CeBIT 2010 will be available soon and MSI are tipping their hand for what pleasures they’ll have at the show.  Most interesting are the latest Wind Top all-in-ones, the 24-inch AE2420 and the 22-inch AE2280; rather than the nettop-based models we’ve seen before, these new Wind Tops will use Intel’s Core i3, i5 and i7 processors, ramping up to 3D capabilities on the top-spec machine.

The 24-inch Wind Top AE2420 has a 120Hz refresh rate and, with the appropriate dorky glasses, can show 3D visuals in 1080p resolution.  There are integrated 10W speakers, along with multitouch-capable displays.

The two new models will be on show alongside MSI’s other range of smaller all-in-ones and its Wind Box line of nettops.  No word on pricing for the AE2420 or AE2280 as yet.

MSI Wind U135 Netbook Review

Posted by Digital Electronics On January - 26 - 2010

MSI introduces us its 10-inch Wind U135 netbook powered by Intel’s Pine Trail platform. The Wind U135 Netbook comes in flavors of charcoal, silver, ruby, or sapphire, with a film-printed shiny coating and a new raised chiclet keyboard (we love that term).  A larger-sized touchpad is also included, with 160GB or 250GB hard drive, and 1GB of RAM.  Windows 7 Starter on a 10-inch screen (1024×600 resolution) is driven by a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N450, and mixed in are three USB ports and a 1.3 MP webcam.

MSI Wind U160 has a Fancy Gold Color Film Print coating. It comes with chiclet keyboard and a multitouch touchpad. It measures less than 1-inch thick and weighs just 1kg.

MSI Wind Netbook Review

Posted by Digital Electronics On December - 22 - 2009

MSI provided early details of its first Wind netbooks running on Intel’s Pine Trail platform. The U130 and U135 both update to the 1.66GHz Atom and should get about 15 percent more battery life than previous Winds. They also get a minor aesthetic boost with touches such as a new trackpad.

Differences between the two are relatively minor and depend on storage and networking. Both have 10-inch displays and the same processor, but the U130 is similar to most netbooks with a 160GB hard drive and options of black or white colors; the U135 upgrades to a 250GB drive and color choices like blue, red and silver. Certain models should also have cellular broadband.

MSI should put these models on sale in January, likely from the 4th, and should be priced at about $350 for the U130 and $450 for the U135. More advanced U140 and U160 models are also believed enroute but haven’t been confirmed.
